I have to ask. How do you make them? I love the one Lou put on this Lami I am fishing, and would like to replicate something similar when I build a rod this
winter. If there is a link I need to read, please let me know

Hi Andy,
I'm working on a second one right now and it's not too different from a grip. The things that have worked best for me is to use a long drill bit as a mandrel. I use a 3/8" bit and it's a bit easier to ream it out to fit to the blank. The other thing I did was to make a sanding jig that ensures that the sanded face is a consistent dimension. K

Hey Andy,
Glad you like that seat. I turned that with my cordless hand drill and used a 3/8" by 4" long carriage bolt as a madrel. The cork was a 4" section of an old spinning rear grip. Just slip it onto the mandrel (shim if needed for a tight fit) and start turning while holding the drill in one hand and a sanding tool in the other. I start with a flat mill file that has 4 different cutting surfaces to get a rough shape- then progress from 80-100-220-finally 400 grit sandpaper. I just eyeball it until the diameter is close and then stop to check frequently after that. The end is plugged with a cork stop from the hardware store and I then finish the entire cork reel seat with 4 coats of Minwax polyshades or spar depending on the look that I am after. Hope this helps. Lou |
