I just scored a fenwick FL7 at the local TU cabin fever show. Lawn casted today with both dt7 and wf8 rod seemed to like both. seems like a great rod for both large and small mouth and carp. Any one have experience with this rod?

THe FL were kit rods, blanks. Many are finished with parts that Fenwick included in the kits. Be curious to know what your's looks like
3/10/10 wow, this is interesting. I had no idea. So, I have one kit rod and one factory FL rod. Thanks you guys. Paul

Rockthief,
It would surprise me to find that these were kit rods. I have an FL-6 (a 7'9", 6 wt) and an FL-7 (a 8'3", 7 wt). Both of these have the trademark Fenwick braided wraps above the grip. My instinct is that these rods represented the line after Woodstream bought Fenwick and before they stopped making the fiberglass rods. Not sure your average homebuilder would put those Fenwick signature wraps on above the grip. I don't even think they sold these as blanks. If you know otherwise, I'd like to learn more. I will tell you that the tapers are nice for both of these rods. These were made at the end of an era, probably just a shade after their peak in quality. Donny |

my FL84-5 is labeld BLANK and is a Woodstream. It has varigated wraps and no braids. My FL90-5 (yellow) was bought as a blank and finished by the fellow from whom I bought the completed rod. Donny, yes they are nice tapers and cast easily which is a good thing for me. I will post photos when I feel better. I'll start a new topic for discussion and it should be interesting. I passed on some yellow blanks some months ago because they were FL90-5 and I did not need another. I know, silly me.

The FL6 and FL7 rods were factory built rods...at least all of them that I have ever seen. Fenwick sold lots of blanks with "FL" at the beginning of the model, but the "FL" was followed by 2 or 3 digits, not 1. I've heard several others say that the FL7 is the later version of the FF837, so it should be a real nice rod for what you mentioned. |

Yes, FL-7 is very odd numbering for a factory Fenwick. Donny and LeoCreek are right, these were some of the last glass Fenwicks made. They appear to be the FF786 (FL-6) and FF837 (FL-7) rods with new numbers. I have no idea why Fenwick changed the model numbers. You can sometimes pick these up for chump change because they aren't recognized as factory rods. A guy could fish a lot of different situations with just these two rods.

I've been collecting glass for the last 15 years or so and never been very interested in Fenwick. I have a 5'3" that I blue line with here in Pa. After picking up this rod and all the discussion on the sight about Fenwick I may have to start looking for a few more. |

I've been collecting glass for the last 15 years or so and was never very interested in Fenwick, but after this rod and all your comments I may be reconsidering. I do have a 5' 3" that I use to blue line here in PA. Can't wait to get the FL7 on the water. Sorry for the re-post.

jeva,
Based on today's prices, you are going to wish you bought them 15 years ago. :-) Donny |
