I'm really looking for real bronze, not bronze color. Anyone?

I would think that if you supplied a piece of bronze stock to any of the bamboo rod makers who make their own hardware, they should be able to turn something
out for you (Rush River Rods, J.D. Wagner, etc). Post a query on Clark's under the Rod Making forum (it's a Yuku board).
http://clarksclassicflyrodforum.yuku.com/forums/66/t/Rod-making-restoration-repairs--discussion---related-topics.html Most any metal supply house (local or online) should offer small pieces of naval or phosphor bronze that would be suitable. Round bar stock of .75 to 1 inch would be easiest to turn. Bronze takes on a beautiful, tough patina with exposure and is far more corrosion resistant than nickel silver. The use of nickel silver for reel seats in modern rods is largely the result of many decades of matching ferrules on bamboo rods, where NS is preferred for its lubricity and availability in tubular form for drawing. Yellow brass in ferrules and seats was seen as a cheap substitute for nickel silver, and that reputation "tarnished" more expensive metals that might resemble brass when polished. I think one reason you don't see many antique rods with oxidized (blackened, blued) hardware is because it would have looked too much like it was a way to hide brass hardware, not revealed until the finish was worn through. -CC |

Thanks CC - Thats very interesting about the history of bronze being seen as a cheap substitute for NS. This is part of a Scott f84 build that Gypsy is doing
for me. I want it to have the same feel as the original yellow Scotts but with out mimicking the factory rod. I kept thinking how cool it would be to replace
the original bronze anodized cap and ring with a real bronze cap and ring set. Thanks for advice about the bamboo dealers. I might be following up with one of
them soon....
