loop reels, what the deal? |

Talking about the originals, the ones with the three wheels in the spool frame. Anyone use one, have one, they seem to be a rare item these days.

I have used both a nymph and dry fly reel in the past. I wouldn't exactly call them rare, but are starting to get harder to find. What do you want to know
about them?

Very nice reels and not particularly rare at all. The originals were made by Danielsson for Loop until they had a falling out. Last time I checked (last year)
Danielsson was still making the identical reels, but with the Danielsson name on them rather than Loop.

The reel series you are referring is still built by Danielsson Innovation AB in Sweden and is called the Traditional Series. It was originally sold through
SAGE here in the states and later through Loop. In early 2005 Danielsson severed ties with Loop.

Thanks guys! I don't see many of them around for sale, actually a quick search and you'll see. The newer models are out there.

I still fish a sage 711, which is the big model and was the same as the loop 4, on my spey rod and also fish a 707 on a 7wt in the salt. As long as you let
the pressure off the rollers when you are done fishing they hold up a long time. One difference between the sage reels and the loops is that the sage reels
have a click mechanism that can be engaged and this was not present when they became labled loop.

Those old Loop/Danielsson reels hare highly valued back here in Sweden. All models are, but the old ones start to become collectors item. You still see them
for sale, but in good condition you have to pay $400-500. I have never owned one, but that's because they are so common over here. Much more fun to search
for rare reels. But since they are getting harder to find, maybe I should get one...

I had one back in the early days when Sage sold them. Mine was a large model and I used it in the salt. It was a wonderful reel once you realized the spool
overrun had to be snug. Do you have any idea what about 20 yards of #8 line looks like when spewed out of a reel when a houndfish takes off running?
