New Gypsy built Steffen 7'9" 3 pc. 3/4 wt. pics. |

I received this beauty a few days ago from Gypsy Rod Works and just thought I'd post a few pics. It's wrapped with chinese red tipped black with
Mark's normal flawless work. The reel seat is Pau Ferro, a south american hardwood that matches the color of the blank nicely. I asked Mark M. to do a
custom reel seat/grip for me that is similar to the shape of the all cork FE Thomas bamboo rod grips. The cork transitions into the wood of the seat smoothly
with no check or change in diameter. It's very comfortable and clean looking and he did a wonderful job of it. I haven't fished the rod yet but have
lawn cast it. Being listed as a 3/4, I was a little concerned it might be too soft for a 4 wt. but the action with that line wt. is still plenty strong so I
shouldn't have worried. Gypsy was great to deal with and I highly recommend him! Enjoy the pics.

Gorgeous rod - particularly like that smooth transition from the cork to the wood. Mark continues to build some of the most beautiful rods to be found and I
always look forward to seeing his new creations. Thanks for sharing the photos, tiptop.

This rod brought me out of the shadows - it's absolutely beautiful! Like Duff said, I really like the transition of the reel seat to the grip.
Let us know how it fishes.

Gypsy, as usual a flawless job.
Now for the real question to tiptop. Are you going to fish it, or hang it on the wall in a shadow box?

Tiptop,
Beautiful rod, really beautiful. The Hardy Lightweight looks great on that reelseat. Nice choices all around. CBarclay (Chris), Welcome to the Fiberglass Flyrodders! Thanks for coming out of the shadows and joining in. There are a lot of forum members from the Heartland. Hopefully we can have a middle Missouri Glass Clave someday. Tom |

I definitely will be fishing this rod although it's end of the season here and not many fishing days left -- mostly it's time for streamer fishing or
steelheading. I have a bunch of rods, but I'm not a collector, although I don't know if my wife would agree.

That's a great build and design on a great blank. Fish it in good health tiptop.

When tiptop asked me to make a reel seat/grip like the old F.E.T all cork grips I was admittedly a bit doubtful. I thought the grip would be too slim under
the heel of the palm, to my surprise the grip is extremely comfortable; so much so that i'll be using that style grip on a 7'6" 4wt blank I hope
to build out for myself this winter. Tiptop wanted a wood similar in color to the Steffen blank. Cocobola would have been the obvious choice but it's
difficult to varnish so I looked through my wood box for something else that has a similar color. A 4 yr old block of Pau Ferro seemed like it would do the
trick.
Wood with wax on it (prevents cracking/checking while being dried). And a shot of a the nearly completed "oval" insert. The insert is turned round on the lathe and made oval by hand via Dremel sanding drum and sandpaper. It's a lot of work for a reel seat insert but I prefer the look of the oval seats over mortised ones and the pre-made oval inserts that I've seen don't fit as wide a variety of reel foots as the ones I make by hand. Reel seat hardware is Bellinger .690 nickel silver
