Need your opinion...FF807 vs FF857 |

If you wanted a 7wt, which one would you prefer? Thanks!

mr flymph , if you like a faster action rod and I would say fast glass the ff807 is the one . I never fished a ff857 so I'll pipe down & let more
experienced voices handle this.

Lonnie, to compound your dilemma, SA System 7 glass made by Fisher, are the best 7-wts. I know of, and very lightweight.
They also balance perfectly with a Marquis 7.
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

There is also an FF837, which I like, but I cannot comment on how it compares to the 807 and 857

I am way happier with my 857 than my 807, and if I could only have one.........but luckily, I can, and do, have them both!

Keith,
What is it about the FF857 you like more and what weight line do you fish it with? Lonnie |

Along these same lines of a Fenwick FF807 vs. the FF857 is the FF806. Much lighter than a Sci Ang System 7 and it's an outstanding rod with a WF7 line.
I've owned the System 7, a Hardy JET 7wt. and own a Claudio 857A, and a Berkley Para/Metric (which I like a lot too) all 7 wts.. I like the FF806 with a
seven weight line best of all, hands down.

Lonnie,
Well, trying to put likes/dislikes into words is kinda tough, esp with something like rods, but.. The 807's I have had have always felt a bit clubby to me, and very capable of chucking an 8wt a country mile as well. Powerful rods. The 857's have a little sweeter action, are more a true 7wt, and I am really fond of the extra length. I have a bunch of nice 8'6" rods, so the Fenwick has to wait it's turn a lot, but when it does get out it is using a 7wt line, either an intermediate or a Wf floating. Hey GEARBOY, is the Hardy Jet and the System 7 sort of same rod?? I have a 8'6" 7wt jet and it is pretty fast actioned, always wondered about a System 7. Keith |

Keith, They sure felt exactly alike to me. It was a long time ago, but from what I can recall yes. The Sci Ang System 7 rods were 8'5" and doubt that
inch made any difference. My Claudio feels just like those two, too. So did my Cortland Leon Chandler 8'6" glass rod. Fisher made them all !
This reminds me of the only failure I ever had on the stream with a glass rod. After nearing the end of an incredible morning of fishing, the male ferrule on the Hardy JET rod came loose and fell down into the butt end. |

Hi Lonnie, I'm looking for a FF857 so I would recommend the FF807 for you. I hear it's a great rod.
Oh and Keith (I'm doing my majicwrench imitation now) if you want, you can send me your 807 and being a good sport I'll reimburse you the shipping charge. It's the least I can do. Steve |

Steve, good one!
I've already found an FF857 for sale, it's just a matter of whether or not I'll buy it. If I don't, I'll tell ya where to find it. It's near mint too!!! Lonnie |

Lonnie - You are a true gentleman!
...but seriously, I heard the FF857 is six inches too long |

I'm watching this thread with interest, as I recently purchased an FF857 myself. I haven't had a chance to fish it yet, but really like the feel of
this rod a lot just casting it in the yard. It's definitely a "full thunkin' 7wt", but has a nice tip and feels great in hand. I've never
owned an FF807, but have fished a friend's FF807 and FF806 years ago, and I really like the extra 6" on the FF857 like magicwrench mentioned. While I
haven't had the chance to cast them side by side, the FF857 is a better choice for me for a combination of bass, carp, streamers with a sink tip for larger
trout in rivers, etc., as I'll probably use it on larger waters for the most part compared to folks in the midwest, south, and eastern U.S.
I also have 2 8' 6/7wt glass blanks to build (the Fisher feels like it will be a smooth 7wt which could also handle a DT6 fine, while the Phillipson Epoxite feels like it will be more of a DT6 rod that will also handle a 7wt), so I think I'll have the bases covered for an 8' 7wt should I need/want to fish something a little shorter. Anyway, from all I've heard and seen, all the rods in the FF8x7 series are excellent workhorse rods for a wide range of species and conditions. The size of waters you fish and/or your favorite rod length might make a difference as far as which is the best choice for you. As your attorney, I advise you to split the difference and hold out for an FF837. |

The family resemblence between the FF807, FF837, and FF857 is very close. In my opinion, the two longer rods are a little smoother, but not much. At home I
keep an FF837 or FF857 in the trunk of the car. On the road I happily bring an FF807 because it fits my travel case. I am more likely to fish them with a WF8
line, but that is because I use them more at dusk and dark so feeling the line load is important.
The big difference is price. The FF807 was made in huge quantities, so they do not get much love from the market. I have seen dozens of them sell for $50 or less on eBay. The longer rods always sell for more. If you do buy the FF857, consider picking up an inexpensive FF807 as a backup. Tom |

They're all good. I've fished the 807 forever--seriously, for probably 33 years or so. I have caught bass--large and smallmouth, rainbow trout,
catfish, crappie, bluegill, chain pickeral, and baby tarpon on that rod. It is a very handy rod. The longer versions are at least as handy.

I like a WF7 on mine It's a cannon and will toss the whole line. It feels light in hand and is a joy to cast. IMHO

Another Fenwick 7 wt | ||

Guys, another rod that you may want to keep an eye out for is a late Fenwick-Woodstream FL-7. It is the same as the FF837 in the F-W line. Same brown glass,
grip, wraps. Just sold very late in the production When they had the tapers fine tuned). The Fenwick-Woodstream FL-6 is a 7'9" 6 wt, and is worth
looking for also.

I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of an FF857 that I purchased from one of our esteemed forum members and I have my grandfather's Pflueger Medalist 1495
ready to go on it. I have purchased a couple rods and several reels of late and when I get a chance I will post some photos. This is fun!!!!!!!!
