Don't know if you're in favor of historical restoration of your Stalker, but I'll offer this info in case you are: The wraps were maroon Gudebrod '00' nylon (very hard to get these days, but maybe Winston could spot you 50-60 yards, if they still have any on those big spools they used to stock. Tipping (at the grip, ferrules, and signature wraps only) was white Gudebrod '00' nylon (still available from a few sources). The strippers were Mildrum Carboloy SRMC's (still available from Angler's Workshop and REC). The snakes and tip top were Perfection hard-chromed (try to locate old ones, since the new ones aren't up to grade, nor are Pac Bay or H&H (same company now, I've heard). I'd try to find the real thing or go with Snake Brand. The snakes were smaller than you'd typically see on a production rod (part of the Tom Morgan design). I think they would start at size 2 for a #8 or 10 stripper and taper to a couple of 2/0's at the tip, with several 1/0's and a couple of 1's in between, usually rod length in feet plus two guides (7ft rod would have one stripper and 8 snakes, for instance, 7ft 6in rod would have 9 or 10 total guides, depending on line weight and number of sections). Winston used to have a guide spacing/sizing chart for kit rods and blanks--they may still. If you were able to save the nickel silver hardware (the knurling on the butt cap, grip check, and winding check, as well as the complete sliding band were redesigned in the 90's, so watch for that), all you need is some really top grade cork rings (glued up individually and turned on the rod) and spar varnish. Light line Winstons had a unique cigar shape with just a hint of taper well back toward the rear and a very shallow flare at the cork check. Winston does have some of the old reel seat hardware (including the old aluminum hardware) salvaged from damaged rods, so you could ask them if you need something.

What they provided to me with the Stalker kits I got back then was Gudebrod #337 Maroon, size 00. When I finished the rods with that thread, it was an exact match to a factory original Stalker I had available for comparison. I still have a little on a little styrofoam spool that they sent me, and it's definitely maroon, not scarlett or garnet, which were the other two red shades. I'd be surprised if they used another color thread on the glass rods than they already had on large spools for tipping their bamboo rods. I don't know what was used on the Retro series rods from a few years ago, as 00 maroon nylon had been discontinued by then and, as I understand it, Glenn Brackett had switched to silk for the bamboo rods. It could very well be that the Retros were wrapped with whatever shade of red nylon they were using to tip the graphite rods. Now, of course, all 00 nylon has been discontinued and the color chart for size A is much smaller, too, with maroon size A thread gone.

No longer listed by Gudebrod, but I'm sure some dealers still have it. 00 size nylon is still available in a few colors, too, and it hasn't been made for quite a while.
