Quote: This may be my problem......I have been using P. Gossamer for a while now. I love the thinness and delicacy but making clear wraps has been a challenge. I think air can get trapped in between the wraps and leave shimmering lines in the wraps. I also have seen a cloudiness in some wraps and not others. I use De-alcohol and not real consistent on ratios. Anybody else found this too? Does YLI cure this? Barry |

Barry, I recently wrapped a rod with Pearsalls Gossamer white and found it to be just as transparent as YLI 100. No shimmers and the Pearsalls silk seems to be of higher quality than YLI i.e less fuzzies and consistent color throughout. In my experience the way the silk is wrapped and how the finish is applied are the keys to nice transparent finishes.
I've spent hours and hours on the internet reading old Power Fibers issues, and Bamboo forums and one thing I can say for sure is that peoples experience with finishes and silk wraps very widely. What works for one rod builder doesn't necessarily work for another. I can get beautifully clear wraps with just warmed spar varnish while other folks can't. Some people can get crystal clear wraps with just epoxy and others can't. Who knows why this is but it is. In the end trial and error is what ultimately produces the best results for me. This was wrapped with Gossamer ![]() and this ![]() |

I know this is an old thread. I had to comment that this is an exceptional rod and rod builder. I will use this as a model to strive for on my next project! I
wish I had half the talent and patience to build a masterpiece like this rod.

Somehow I missed this thread too.
Gypsy, I can relate. I like the FL904 so much I "had" to build the 3 piece as well. I think the FL904-3 is slightly faster, and slightly softer, than the 2 piece. Not 2 terms we generally hear together, but that was my impression casting them side by side. Also slight is the operative term. The 2 rods are very, very close in feel. |

Gorgeous craftsmanship, gypsy!
OK, that does it, some day I will have a glass rod with completely transparent wraps. |

Thanks Lanyard stretcher. Yup it's an old thread, been a little more than 2 years since I built that rod
Wetfly, the soft slow action of the Lami Honeys isn't for everybody but they definitely have their fans. While I still fish the FL9043 nowadays I prefer the Lami 7' 3wt. I find it to be a little smoother than the 7'6" 4wt and it will fish a 3 or 4 wt line very well. If you haven't already check out the FL8433, it's a nice one. Interesting this thread was brought up, after not wrapping a rod with transparent wraps for awhile I'm wrapping the second rod in as many weeks with some form of transparent wraps on the rod. FL9043 I recently finished, ferrules are wrapped with white silk, rust red spiraled over and finished with varnish. The white silk turned water clear after the varnish was applied without the slightest suggestion of shimmers or frosting. (the tiny specs are water/mist) ![]()

Mark- that is absolutely stunning. Your finish work is up there with Dave Lewis'- who's work with epoxy and varnish has always been at the top of my
list.
