I recently obtained a FY-120 8'6" Standard Taper Shakespeare Wonderod which I thought might turnout to be a good LMB rod. I am looking forward to out-fishing my bass buddies who bring bulging quivers of pricey bonefish graphite on our bass expeditions.

Tested a number of bass lines on the rod and I like the Rio Outbound Short WF8F the best, it will toss a deerhair bug the size of a tennis ball. Also, for kicks I loaded it up with a compact Scandi shooting head and it rocks a 300 gr like nobodies business. So, now I will have to take it out for Retro Day steelheading too.

I was wondering if any of you have opinions about the Kwik Taper and Omni taper for casting bass bugs, since I am thinking about acquiring a few more Wonderods for bass.

I also am interested in a Wonderod for trout fishing, dry flies in 5 or 6 wt. I fish mostly medium to larger western rivers in CA & OR.

Thanks for any information and opinions you wish to share.

Well, my work is done for the day, I need one more component to arrive before I can start my next rod, and the others should have a long drying period now that all but the last coats are done, so I can't tinker with them. So my thinking came back around to my recently acquired as-new Fenwick FF806, which I am really going to try to learn to like. I was very tempted to strip it from the butt-section trim down, retaining only the reel seat, which I always liked. That would be stupid. So I won't look at the trim, and to my surprise, the slender elongated grip feels ok, unlike they did to me years ago.

This leaves me worrying about trivia, at least until morning coffee wears off and I can take a nap. (1) What was the origin/idea behind the name (not the technolgy) "Feralite" which sounded like an abandoned wild-eyed cat to me.
Hey guys, I've been enjoying the heck out of this site for the last several months, great knowledge and civility to be found here. In that time I've gone from zero to more than a dozen fiberglass rods and click and pawl reels. This is fun and addictive stuff. Looking forward to posting about some of my more interesting acquasitions.

Now on to a sadder subject, today I received a formerly near mint USA made 8' P40 Parametric. The USPS pulled a Samsonite on it and nearly sheared off a foot and a half of one end the packing tube. The rod tube is in two pieces and the rod itself is hanging on by a thread an inch up from the hook keeper. Their are also a couple of 1" vertical fractures another 1.5" up from the break. My questions for you are; would repairing it have it fishing anything like it's original action? And if so, is it worth it cost wise. I don't have the skills and would have to find someone to fix it. Looking forward to...

I've been wondering how light of a line wt and how short in length Fisher was producing glass blanks back in the day. So, I flipped through a Winston 1977-78 catalog tonight and made note of a couple interesting items:

The lightest line glass rod that was offered was a Stalker 2/3 wt, in lengths 6'6"-8'0". The shortest length glass rod offered was 5'6" in a 5 wt rod.

For some comparison, the lightest/shortest bamboo rod offered was a 5'6" 3 wt Leetle Feller, and the lightest/shortest graphite rod offered was a 7'6" 4 wt.

Wow! They were making 2/3 wt glass rods back in the '70s?! I always thought that 2/3 wts were a '90s phenomenon. I'm not sure who was the first to introduce such light line rods back then, but I'm guessing Winston was among the pioneers. To offer some comparison (although it may not be fair), the 1974 Phillipson Catalog here on the forum shows Phillipson's lightest line...

Fully understanding that this site was built for discussing, arguing about, and preserving a historical record of fiberglass fly rods, the fact that a strand on slower graphite rods is now over 7 pages long indicates that we as a group have interests that extend beyond fiberglass. Hell, I bet a few of you even have a bamboo rod or two*G*. I have it all. Vintage glass, modern glass, graphite of every weight and action, and yes, I now even own a couple of those 6 sided things. What I find perplexing though is the constant dismissal of modern graphite, and the constant equating graphite with "telephone poles", which is hardly the case. In fact, of the several hundred different graphite rods that I have had the opportunity to cast or fish with, only a few of them resembled telephones poles, then again I never cast a phone pole(nor have I tasted s#!%, but have equated Budweiser and a bad cup of coffee as tasting like s#!% myself). So, my question for...

Hello,
As if I need another blank or rod, but I just picked up this fiberglass blank. I had forgotten that I set a snipe on it and was surprised that I won it.

I just got back from a vacation with my parents at my childhood home in Pasadena, CA. I found a Kaufmann Streamborn catalog from 1978 in my old closet. They were cataloguing all manner of cane, fiberglass and graphite, but what caught my eye was the section about the Walton Powell glass. Seems Powell would make a rod, from 6 1/2' to 8 1/2' (I'm doing the lengths by memory here, but what's important is the line weights): Powell claimed that EACH rod could cast line weights 3-6, and even 7,depending whether you flicked the tip or engaged the butt strength in the cast. Thus, your choice was just what length of rod you wanted.

OK. My guess is that the short rods would feel pretty stiff/strong, the action softening as the rod length extended. Would I be right? What would an 8 footer feel like? Any experience out there?

Happy, Happy!
Peter
