I watched a Kelly Galloup DVD on streamer fishing last fall. He advocates the "jerk and strip" method where the fly moves through the water by a series of rod tip jerks and the slack is stripped with the off hand. He also strongly endores unweighted streamers fished with a sinking line. Galloup says that unweighted flies move more naturally through the water because weighted flies sink in between strips or jerks. I tried the jerk and strip but couldn't ever get comfortable with it. However, switching to unweighted flies and sinking lines did pay off, I caught more and larger fish this winter than ever before. Does using unweighted flies make a difference?

My annual trip to the Guadalupe river in the Texas Hill Country finally arrived. We were quite excited about the prospects this year. Last year, the river was flowing around 25 cfs, and I knew with the recent snows/rains that the river would have water. Wow, it had water. Not being a TU member, there is limited opportunities for river access. And with the water at dangerous levels, wading was not an option. So, unfortunately, flyfishing was quite limited for me. I did give a shot, but it was unproductive. We did catch some giant trout on spinning tackle. All in all, a good weekend was had by all. Camping, fishing, friends and enough cigars to kill a lab rat makes for a good time.

And for those watching another thread about nymph fishing and strike indicators...every raft that floated by had every rod rigged with a thingabobber. I made it out for a few days of camping and fishing on a popular NC stream and a few smaller waters near by. Sat. started off chilly, in the mid 30's with some wind. I arrived early with a few rods rigged, my Steffen with a nymph rig consisting of Caddis larvae or hot bead fly and a chartreuse midge, the other, a lighter Lami 3wt with a small black stripped midge parachute. I fished a popular run leading into a large pool for a little while in the moring before the crowds moved in, and picked up a few nice fish.

Big eastern brown stone nymph

Small Caddis larvae- had good luck with these
<img height="450"...
